NEW YORK - Clayton Richard finally realized he was on the wrong field.
For 21 years, the 6-foot-5, 240-pound Richard thought he was happiest covered in pads with a football in his hand, leading an offensive charge down the field.
But after being frustrated with his place in the Michigan football program, Richard moved across campus to the baseball diamond.

After watching Josh Hamilton's astonishing 28-home run display in the Home Run Derby Monday night, I couldn't help but think that a Pittsburgh Pirate was on the mound for it.
It was 71-year-old Claybon Counsil instead. Still, the Pirates might benefit by giving the batting practice hurler a tryout.

From his first professional track workout to his current position as an Olympic qualifier in track and field, it seems Howard graduate David Oliver who is constantly in fast motion, finally has a moment to slow down and reflect.
"I'm just trying to keep it even keel, and a level head about everything," Oliver said.

We're closing in on a week since Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez settled the lawsuit West Virginia filed against him. Do you feel better now? After so many people complained about Rodriguez dragging Michigan through the mud and unnecessarily distracting the Wolverines, are we really better off now that the lawsuit is over? I don't think so.

Checking in from the Pittsburgh Pro-Am Summer League at the Greentree SportsPlex:
Pitt's young guards continue to insist with their play that the shooting guard position might not be as detrimental to Pitt's success as originally diagnosed.
In the first game of the night, sophomore Bradley Wanamaker and freshman Ashton Gibbs of FWG Realty put on a shooting clinic against Levance Fields, DeJuan Blair and Aliquippa GE.

Just as Drexel was beginning to dominate the conference, lacrosse competition will only get stronger.
UMass and Penn State will be joining the Colonial Athletic Association's men's lacrosse conference in 2010.
My initial reaction, like many others, was to jump to the conclusion that their additions would be purely beneficial to the CAA.

Pierre De Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympics, once summed up his opinions on the Games in a legendary quote.
"The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part."
It took eight years on the National Team and a missed qualification for the 2004 Athens Games, but 2002 College graduate Tom Paradiso is set to take part in the Olympics as a member of the United States rowing team in the lightweight four event.

Since arriving on campus June 16, things have been quiet on the Terrelle Pryor front. This is a good thing. This means he is getting down to business and putting in a lot of time in the film and weight rooms. Remind you of anybody? How about 2006 Heisman Trophy Winner, Troy Smith.

At least one Penn athlete has participated in every Summer Olympics since the 1900 Paris games.
And, thanks to two rowers, that streak will continue through to next month's Games.
Tom Paradiso (Col '02) and Susan Francia (Col '04) qualified for the men's lightweight four and the women's eight, respectively.
