This article was not meant as an extension of my article from last week, but my pea brain works in such a way where I can't think outside of a certain discourse after it has been explored. But this article is definitely an interesting one and relates to having bad taste in music exclusively, rather than having bad taste in everything.
Eman Laerton does not like popular music of today, but rather than writing in to newspapers complaining about it, he has explored a personal venture that has been his outlet for expressing his views on the current climate of popular music. Rather than writing a pretentious editorial and hiding behind a typewriter, he is not afraid to get right into the faces of those he's critiquing and tell them to their faces. Some may think of Eman Laerton as a voice for the little guy and some may just find him irritating, especially those who he deems as having bad taste in music.
Laerton's project is called youhavebadtasteinmusic.com or yhbtm.com and features Laerton going to the concerts of popular musicians and confronting their fans, while sporting a long robe, helmet and megaphone. The website features his ventures to the concerts of Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera, Adema, Ruben Studdard, Train, Staind, Linkin Park, Evanescence, Hoobastank, Nickelback, Story of the Year and his latest trek to the concert of the new incarnation of Creed, Alter Bridge. The videos are free to view on the website in Quicktime format and are roughly eight minutes in length. The website also features a mailing list and the sale of t-shirts that say "you have bad taste in music." Another section of the website's front page is the month's bad taste offender, who is currently Oprah Winfrey.
Laerton's treks are often fuelled by innovation and inspiring improvisational dialogue, including one of my favourite lines, spouted at a group of older women at the Justin Timberlake concert, "You don't sleep with 12 year-olds, so why do you listen to their music?" He will also often do role playing scenarios, where people will accept medals on behalf of a band, select their favourite songs by a band, fill out mad libs or play certain characters in a scripted play.
