2. I think everybody having equal access creates a fair election. Everybody having the same access or means to communicate with the students, articles in the Press. Having the Press not cover one specific member of the election. Also having members of the current executive not favour any particular candidate, all candidates get the same information.
3. I think if an election was going unfairly, whether I was a bystander or actually involved, I would handle it two different ways. For example, if I was in my executive position and not actually in the election and saw something that was unfair, I would bring it to the attention of the CRO, and if nothing was done about it and I thought that something was done wrong that was creating an unfair advantage for one of the candidates I would probably take it to the Board of Directors. Being involved as a candidate, and I saw something that was being done unfairly, I would probably say something to one of the candidates about it, and if there was still a problem, I would talk to the CRO.
4. The President Dr. Jack Lightstone, vice president of finance is Steven Pillar, the VP Academic is Terry Boak, the associate vice president of student services is Kim Meade.
5. BUSU's position financially has grown much stronger this year. We came into this year with a retained deficit a little worse than $130,000. We set our budget very aggressively, so we had a little more money to spend. We were still able to increase funding in a number of services and programs, but budget for a net income on the year of about $105,000.
Right now we are on target to do a bit better than that. We were also rather conservative in our estimate of how much money we were going to receive from student fees, so when they come in where we budgeted, and the businesses do as well as they have been, we are looking to be in quite a strong financial position at the end of the year, coming very near to, or completely eliminating the deficit. Next year we hope to start building a small reserve that will allow us to be a little more flexible.
6. It is somewhat important. There are a lot of students unions around that run in the red all the time, and they just try and stay above the point of going bankrupt. I think it is responsible to try and be a little bit in the black, so that if something does happen, we are in a situation in which we can deal with it. If you are in the black, you are able to have a bad year, and still be in a strong financial position at the end of it.
7. It's hard to say that there is one major focus that isn't money. Pretty much everything that costs money, or makes us money, the VPFA is involved with pretty much all of it. There are changes coming to policy that will make the VPFA more of a chief financial officer. The change will mean that the VPFA will be involved with signing everything that comes out.
