There is really nothing quite like sweating in a field with a bunch of strangers while listening to dozens of awesome bands.
Music festivals compete with each other every year for the biggest headliners, and at the same time act as a vehicle for touting up-and-coming artists.
Here is a guide to some of the major festivals happening this summer that will have audiences running from stage to stage trying not to miss their next favourite act.
Bonnaroo
When: June 12-15
Where: Manchester, TN
It will cost you: $209.50-$244.50
Headliners: Pearl Jam, Metallica, Jack Johnson, Kanye West
Bonnaroo celebrates both music and the arts, so in between concerts you can check out their various exhibits or catch a film in the Bonnaroo Cinema. Over 100 bands play throughout the festival's four days, and their line-up covers just about every genre of music, from Tegan and Sara to Lupe Fiasco.
Coachella
When: April 25-27
Where: Indio, CA
It will cost you: $260
Headliners: Jack Johnson, Portishead, Roger Waters, Kraftwerk
Coachella seems to be getting really good at debuting bands that haven't played together in ages - last year, Rage Against the Machine, and this year, Portishead will take over their main stage after a 10-year hiatus. Approximately 100 acts will show that music in the middle of a desert never sounded so good.
Hillside
When: July 25-27
Where: Guelph, ON
It will cost you: TBA
Headliners: TBA
This modestly-sized festival has staged some big artists over the years - The Arcade Fire, The Sadies and … wait for it … Chumbawumba, acoustic-style. This year's official line-up will be announced in May. Ticket prices will be confirmed in mid-April.
Lollapalooza
When: Aug. 1-3
Where: Chicago, IL
It will cost you: $190-$205/three-day pass
Headliners: TBA
Lollapalooza is a giant celebration of music and the arts, and usually brings in huge names from the music industry. Last year brought Pearl Jam, Daft Punk and Ben Harper. Their eagerly awaited full 2008 line-up will be announced on April 7 - rumours are circling that Radiohead will be the big draw this summer.

A bunch of strangers and a lot of sweating but all for a very good cause. I can't begin to describe the feeling at such a concert. It's simply amazing. (Continued…)
