Hopefully the wine doesn't get to me," said Daniel Victor of hisupcoming performance at the Niagara Wine Festival. "I don't want to fall off my piano bench."
As though he needs any anxieties before stepping on stage.
Victor is speaking about his inclusion on the Big Ticket Event bill. Better known as the creative mastermind behind Neverending White Lights (NWL), Victor has not exactly been properly credited with the singer/songwriter that he is rightfully deserving of. Both his albums, Act I: Goodbye Friends of the Heavenly Bodies and Act II: The Blood and the Life Eternal, have featured guest vocalists more often than Victor's own voice, despite that he writes the material.
Among these guest vocalists, Victor has been afforded the opportunity to work with some of Canada's best rock singers, including Finger Eleven's Scott Anderson, Our Lady Peace's Raine Maida, The Watchmen's Daniel Graeves, Todd Kerns, Hawksley Workman, Melissa Auf Der Maur and St. Catharines' own Dallas Green. Not a bad list, considering that is only the Canadian content.
However, Neverending White Lights' second album pushed Victor a little further towards the spotlight. He began taking vocals duties on more songs, including the first single "Always". This helped in determining some of the decisions he has made for the upcoming third act.
"The idea is that on Act III I'm going to be handling all the vocals on the record," said Victor. "We're going to bypass guest vocalists for this round, which I believe has sort of been a natural progression.
"In writing Act II I realized that a lot of the songs fit better with my persona just because they were closer to the heart, and I didn't really want to give them away [...] And it will be more like a band live, which I think fans are kind of looking for, because we don't bring a ton of guest vocalists when we play live."
Victor is also quickly becoming one of the more prolific Canadian artists. Having only released Act II less than a year ago, he has already begun writing the material for Act III, which he will begin recording come December. Along with this, he recently wrapped up recording a side project called The Black Ribbons, a more uptempo, 80's new-wave influenced solo effort, and is planning a new project with Ours' singer Jimmy Gnecco called The Darling Creeps, where Victor will handle drumming duties.
