For the last couple of months, I have been stressing to friends about how awesome a venue 73 is when it isn't jam packed and sweaty. When there is enough room to breathe and see the band well, there is a certain aura that fills the room that is intimate, warm and unbeatable.
This couldn't have been more the case when The Hunt for Shred October tour featuring Fear Before and Baptized in Blood came to town on Sept. 10.
Fear Before has travelled across North America countless times after touring in support of four albums over the last seven years. The band consists of singer David Marion, guitarist and vocalist Adam Fisher, bass player Mike Madruga and drummer Clayton Holyoak, and when they showed up to 73 they seemed excited to play a small comfortable space, as opposed to L3, where they performed last summer.
"I already love this way more. It's much more our speed. Playing this little hall show on the floor is going to be way more intimate and fun for everyone at the show," said Marion.
After seven years of playing together, the band's style in both performance and music has aged and become more cohesive, albeit getting a little bit weirder and experimental. Prior to the show, the band was asked to sum up what audiences could expect from a Fear Before concert.
"We are not like other bands. You are definitely not going to mistake us for the bands before or after us. In every aspect, be it our music, or the way we look, or what we say when we are on stage, you will know what band we are. Our live show is always changing, and always weird," added Fisher.
This statement couldn't have been more true. Upon walking into the venue, the band's massive red and white light boxes and their gear were garnished with branches and leaves. The drummer was wearing a hat that had bull horns attached to it and Marion and Fisher, who both seemed like humble and normal guys before the show were wearing dresses, with large glasses on their faces.
The band, which played mostly songs from their recent self-titled release, was spastic and energetic. While there weren't many people remaining in the audience when they performed, the band seemed somewhat unfazed by it and put on a memorable performance.
The highlight of the night occurred right after the band finished their set. A heavy electronic dance song came on, the light boxes flashed along and all the members of Baptized in Blood and Fear Before grabbed all the branches and equipment from the stage and started dancing around the room. It was bizarre, exciting, and definitely different from the standard concert experience.
"On our Canadian tour last summer, it was by ourselves, we weren't really on tour with anybody," said Marion.
"We've been having a great time with Baptized in Blood this tour. They are sponsored by Jagermiester, so things can get pretty crazy, pretty quick. Every single night on the tour has consisted of a lot of nudity and a lot of laughter."
