For now the agreement maintains what it has set out to do, which is help conserve the polar bear population and the MOU press release states that, "between Aboriginal peoples and all levels of government, an unprecedented level of effort has been put forth to conserve and manage polar bears in Canada".
The agreement itself demonstrates a dedication to the cooperation of Canada, Greenland and Nunavut. This means that all decisions relating to how it is carried out will be agreed upon by all the parties involved, Inuit hunters included.
Issues of polar bear conservation have become more prevalent in the media partially due to the negative effects that global warming has had on sustaining the polar bear population. In order to understand the other factors affecting the polar bear population, "it is important to do more studies in the area", said Njegovan.
Overall, the fact that the MOU was created and cohesively agreed upon by Canada, Nunavut and Greenland, is a positive start to maintaining and sustaining the shared polar bear population.
"The Memorandum of Understanding will help ensure conservation and sustainable management of Kane Basin and Baffin Bay polar bear populations into the future," said Prentice in the MOU press release.
