The Brock women's basketball team dropped another January game this past Saturday, falling 72-50 to the Windsor Lancers on Jan. 23.
In the six games since coming back from the Christmas break, the Badgers have outscored their opponents 421-403, but have a 4-2 record to show for it.
At home versus the Lancers, the team just couldn't put it together. They fell behind early and were not able to catch Windsor on the way to the routing. The Badgers allowed 38 points in the paint while scoring only 10 of their own. They shot 28.3 per cent from the field, including just 23.5 per cent from beyond the arc.
Brock fell behind 39-24 by the half, and a big part of the problem, according to head coach Si Khounviseth, was his team's inability to score up close.
"We just didn't shoot the ball well. We need layups," he said. "We missed 10 lay-ups in the first half. If we convert five of those, it's a five-point ballgame."
In addition to the missed lay-ups, contributions were thin, too. Brock only had two players reach double figures in points. Fourth-year guards Whitney Gorges and Britt Pegg had 16 and 10 points respectively, making up for over half of the team's point total. Gorges lead the team with seven rebounds. Coming off the bench, Pegg added five boards of her own, but also had eight steals and three assists - both stats led the team.
"We just didn't talk today. Every time we had a mental lapse, they took advantage of it," said third-year guard Devyn Cuncic. "We messed up and couldn't make a run back."
The 72 points Brock allowed was just the second time they've given up that many in regulation all season long.
"[With] a team like that, you know they're going to score," Khounviseth said. "We didn't do a good job of adjusting against the pressure. We didn't do a good job of getting on the boards. We got five defensive rebounds in the first half. That hurt us."
Brock was out-boarded 49-28 overall, a running theme for the team this season. The Badgers' two tallest players, who only saw 18 combined minutes of floor-time, were towered over by three Lancers who were listed at 6'3" or above.
"Their size was too big for us to overcome today. We didn't do a good job of bodying them up," said Khounviseth.
"We take breaks sometimes […] Our shooting needs to be better," said Cuncic. "We just need to take it hard to the basket and move the ball on offence."
After four straight road games before Saturday's loss, the Badgers' schedule settles down going into February. With eight games left, only two are on the road, and they only have back-to-back games once more - both at home.
"That's going to help us," Khounviseth said. "In the month of January, it's been extremely difficult for us. It's felt like we were on the road forever."
The Badgers' next action is Jan. 27 when they host the Laurier Golden Hawks at 6:00 p.m. in the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
