Brock and Haiti: how we are helping
Tim Stacey
Issue date: 2/2/10 Section: News
For the past three weeks, you've most likely noticed the multiple Haiti Relief campaigns being run by different organizations. Well, it's starting to pay off.
OPIRG, one of Brock's most experienced social justice and environmentally conscious research groups, has raised over $1,200 from the two bake sales they have run.
Residence students may remember Daud Grewal visiting their house or floor over the weekend to collect bottles; Grewal and a team of volunteers raised more than $600 through his bottle drive.
Also, participants in the silent auction will be pleased to know that the event was highly successful, and the total is being tallied.
These may not seem like impressive numbers, but when combined with the efforts from the week before, it easily breaks the $10,000 mark.
However, the work has only just begun. Stay alert for more events such as a Samosa sale on Feb. 3 in the International Lounge, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament and more.
Also, on Feb. 11, Brock will play host to a Superior Court Judge who has had over 20 years experience in Haiti.
Judge Jim Turnbull has traveled to Haiti over 35 times with others involved in the Joy and Hope of Haiti an organization that has built dozens of schools in Haiti. He will be speaking about his involvement in the country on Feb. 11, from 7-9 p.m. in Thistle 256.
There is no doubt in anyone's mind that Brock is doing a great thing by working so hard to help Haiti. However, if you are not a part of the St. Catharines campus, or not a Brock student, there are many ways for you to still get involved.
You have most likely seen on TV the commercials for the "text donation". By simply texting the word "Haiti" to 90999, you can donate $10 (charged to your phone bill) to the Red Cross' effort for Haiti.
This is without a doubt the simplest and most passive way to help Haiti, and by doing so you would be joining the estimated three million others who have participated within the past three weeks.
Also, music fans should be aware of Music for Relief, a Web site with a free download of unreleased songs by famous artists. The compilation features such bands as The All American Rejects, Lupe Fiasco and the Dave Mathews Band. Upon downloading the compilation, you will be prompted to donate.
Last, the creative T-shirt design online community Threadless.com is featuring a "Tee for Haiti". For $10 you can buy an originally deigned tee with the creole words for "many hands make the load lighter" illustrated on its front. Over $70,000 has been raised so far from the shirt sales. One hundred per cent of the proceeds from the sales will be donated to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief and Development Fund.
With all these options in mind, there is no excuse for not helping out. So make sure you participate in at least one, and do your part as a member of a country more fortunate than Haiti.
